Ghana Telecom to rectify system

Ghana Telecom has initiated measures to rectify the anomalies in its billing system to its customers. This followed public outcry against the company’s persistent wrong billing running into millions of cedis.

While most of the customers complained of being surcharged with foreign and local bills which they had no idea of, others complained of bills for lines which have not been functioning or several months.

When contacted the management of Ghana Telecom said it was implementing certain measures to cleanse the billing system to ensure credibility. Though the complaints of wrong billing were not as alarming as customers would like the company to believe, the company was doing all it could to rectify the situation, it said.

Mr Johnnie Tetteh-Addy, General Manager, Corporate Communications, Ghana Telecom, made this known in Accra, when contacted by “Times” on numerous reports of wrong billings, especially in Accra. He said that where customers presented genuine cases of wrong billing and the facts were established, the situation is rectified.

Mr Tetteh-Addy noted that some of the cases of wrong billing were indeed not genuine adding that “some people think they are the only people who use their phones at home, but sometimes their children or even housemaids use the phones when they are not at home.” He said that the company gained nothing by serving customers with wrong bills but asked the customers with genuine cases to report to the situation to be rectified.

On the provision of enough phone booths, he said it was the intention of the company to provide 10,000 booths by the end of the year but due to financial constraints and managerial changes, it might not be able to meet the target.
