Team Ghana capped off a remarkable performance at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships, claiming an impressive 69 medals as the three-day competition concluded at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.
The host nation’s junior swimmers were among the standout performers, finishing second overall with 43 medals, just behind Senegal, who topped the standings with 31 medals, including 11 golds. Ghana secured 10 gold medals, narrowly missing out on the top spot, while Nigeria finished third with 32 medals, also claiming 10 golds.
The event brought together some of West Africa’s most promising young talents, showcasing fierce competition and camaraderie across the lanes.
In the individual junior categories, Benin’s Lonnah Eliane Douillet stole the spotlight, being named Best Female Swimmer after winning seven medals, including six golds. Ghana’s Lea El Haj followed closely in second place with five medals (three gold), while compatriot Jada Yankey impressed with 11 medals, including two golds, to finish third.
The strong medal haul and individual achievements underline Ghana’s growing reputation in aquatic sports, particularly at the youth level.
The Ghana Swimming Association hailed the performance as a major step forward for the nation’s swimming programme, crediting the athletes’ dedication and the growing investment in facilities such as the Borteyman Sports Complex.
With 69 medals and a second-place finish overall, Ghana’s young swimmers have made a clear statement, the future of Ghanaian swimming is brighter than ever.
