Ghana sets up Africa’s first UMTS900 network

Chinese vendor, Huawei, has deployed UMTS900 (3G) technology on the network of MTN Ghana. This is the first time that UMTS has been successfully used for voice, video and data in the 900MHz frequency band in Africa. MTN is using the technology to extend its 3.5G network to more rural communities. MTN had 50,000 3G subscriptions at end- 2009.
