The Five Pounds No Balance Appeal Fund, set up in March this year by the Ghana High Commission, London, to raise funds to procure basic tools for the Ghana Police has so far bagged ₤11,295.86 (about 158m)cedis
A total of ₤5,200.00 of the amount was raised at a special Picnic In the Garden extravaganza held during the Bank Holiday weekend at the Mission’s premises located at 104 Highgate Hill, in London.
The eight-hour musical and cultural extravaganza was patronised by representatives of Ghanaian community Associations, identifiable groups, members of Nananom association of the UK and friends of Ghana.
Side attractions at the event included a classic display by a group of children of the Cagle Family of Oxford, a religious group who thrilled the crowd with pulsating music, face painting and balloon making for interested children who patronised the event.
The Abrempong Cultural Troupe also set the event ablaze with vibrating sounds from a collection of fontomfrom drums and exquisite dances while Mr. Smart Nkansah, Ghana’s highlife meastro treated the audience with the latest hits from his repertoire.
The Wives of Ghanaian Diplomats Association, Kojo and Bongo bar Restaurants provided associated Ghanaian foods cooked on site, notably kelewele, waakye, jollof rice, akonfem, spicy kebabs.
Speaking at the event, the first of its kind to be organised at the Mission’s Highgate premises, Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, thanked Ghanaians who had so far made generous contributions to the Fund.
He urged the Five Pounds No Balance Appeal Fund Committee made up of representatives of identifiable Ghanaian community associations to intensify its efforts to meet its target by the end of November this year.
He told the gathering that as a result of logistical support made available to the Police Force by the NPP Government, the Ghana Police was gradually regaining its strategic role as the protector of internal security in Ghana.
He praised the Police for their prompt response to many emergency calls and other duties such as maintenance of law and order and protection of properties.
The High Commissioner said the NPP Government would continue to strengthen the Police to maintain peace since peace is a pre-requisite for development.
