Ghana News Agency to uplift its visibility

Accra, Feb. 12, GNA-The Ghana News Agency (GNA) needed to work towards regaining its visibility on the Ghanaian Media scene, Mr Reginald Laryea, Chairman of the Board of the Agency, has said.
He was addressing a meeting of Regional Managers of the national news agency in Accra to assess their challenges and the standing of the Agency in Ghana’s media community and the eyes and minds of the citizenry and officialdom.
Launched on March 5, 1957 to herald Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957, the GNA seemed to have lost its premier position as the medium of reference and preference for local and international news.
Mr Laryea said the Board and Management were working out a number of initiatives which coupled with positive attitude of staff should see the Agency through its difficulties.
Ms Adjoa Yeboah-Afari, a member of the Board, urged the Regional Managers to ensure that news from the regions achieved total quality in terms of news value, editing, mechanical and professional accuracy.
She discussed some of the common slips that occur in the Agency’s news reports with the Regional Managers.
Mr Mawusi Afele, Acting General Manager, said the current situation of the Agency called for a re-engineering to make it relevant to the current realities in the country.
He urged the Regional Managers to explore ways of making the Agency relevant and attractive to stakeholders in their various regions and raise output.
The Regional Managers called for regular in-service training for all staff to keep them in tune with developments in their fields of competency.
They also urged Management and Board members to make periodic visits to the regions to enable them appreciate the challenges there.
