Ghana needs electoral reforms – Akufo-Addo

The Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Mission for South Africa’s elections, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, has hinted the need for an electoral overhaul to ensure that the country’s elections are free and fair.

Speaking to Hello FM’s King Edward an interview on Monday, the 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party explained that South Africa has advanced in elections and if certain things they do in their elections are permitted in our elections, no party will raise any concern after the general elections.

“South Africa has an independent auditor who audits the results before it reaches the electoral commission. Secondly, Unlike Ghana, where the electoral commission is given 48 hours to declare results, South Africa’s constitution gives the electoral commission of South Africa 7 days to make sure that all political parties are satisfied before the results are declared,” he noted.

Asked why he is calling for an early congress to elect a new flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo vehemently denied the allegations, explaining that he has never made such comments.

“We just elected our party executives and they are going about their duties. The party has a constitution and we will go by the party’s constitution as it has been the tradition of the party. You know these NDC papers are mischievous and diabolical, they have not written anything good about me or my political career”.
