Ghana needs assistance in education and health sectors- Speaker

Accra, July 6, GNA- The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey on Tuesday said Ghana after years of independence, has not been able to stand on its feet in education and health sectors. “Poverty has become the order of the day as a large number of our population still cannot afford three square meals a day and access to good drinking water”.

Mr. Ala Adjetey said this when the new British High Commissioner, Mr. Gordon Wetherell paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Parliament.

The Speaker said in the educational system there were a lot of denials as the country needed 100 percent intake of children of school going age, adding, “but we have not been able to achieve this”. Mr. Ala Adjetey pointed out that the secondary and tertiary education, lack infrastructure and facilities, saying, “These are the areas that the country needed assistance.”

“Education is the fundamental tool of a nation’s development and it will be of great importance that our people get education.”

“We are now two friends. A relationship of equals and should be cordial, deepened to achieve a mutual benefit”, he Speaker said. Mr. Wetherell said the just ended G8 Summit had Africa at the top of its agenda in the areas of education and health. He commended Ghana for its peacekeeping missions.
