Ghana needs agric-tailored education – GCPP

The flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr Henry Lartey, has said education should be adapted to agriculture, since the sector is the backbone of the economy.

According to the leader of the party, whose vision is to domesticate the economy, the party will marshal resources towards improving the plight of farmers and other agriculture workers if voted into power.

Speaking to Class News, Dr Lartey said a GCPP government would focus on the farmer, rather than consultants who tend to make money off the toil of the farmers.

“The vision for agriculture is to actually make sure that we have the best farmers, the best agriculture company in the world. We have to make sure that the education system is developed to suit agriculture just like when General Acheampong was around and Operation Feed Yourself was in practice,” he stated.

“Every school must have its farm and those, who are learning agriculture, should be those, who are in charge so that they will learn on the field, so that although the schools may need to buy food, they will buy just a little bit because they provide most of the agricultural produce on the school farms.”

Dr Lartey noted: “Ghanaians are very good when it comes to smallholder farming. … People are talking about mechanised farming; it is also good, but that is for the big companies. …The finance will be going to them, not to the consultants, who are taking the capacity-building money and it doesn’t get to the farmers, that is why the farming is not doing well.”
