Ghana Navy commended for service to the nation

Sekondi, Dec. 30, GNA – Mr Joseph Akudibila, Deputy Minister for Defence on Thursday commended the Ghana Navy for assisting the Electoral Commission during the just ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

He made the commendation when speaking at this year’s West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) of the Western Naval Command in Sekondi.

Mr Akudibila said the presence of the Navy at sea during the election period and the immense security support that the Western Naval Command gave to the Jomoro District Electoral Officials was worth mentioning. He said the Ministry of Defence has noted with satisfaction, the tremendous effort and the professionalism exhibited by naval personnel over the years, despite numerous constraints.

Mr Akudibila said the government was aware of the unhealthy state of the naval fleet and the accommodation problems facing naval personnel. Mr Akudibila urged naval personnel to continue to work harder with zeal and commitment for the nation to achieve its objectives.

He said the vision of the government of President Kufuor to steer the nation to prosperity popularly dubbed “Positive Change Chapter II” could only be achieved in a stable political atmosphere and in an atmosphere of sustainable peace and tranquillity.

Mr Akudibila called on the Navy to remain focused, loyal and vigilant at all times for the realisation of the socio-economic development of the country.

Rear Admiral John Gbenah, Chief of Naval Staff said the Navy arrested more illegal boats and made more money for the government this year than the previous years.

He said these achievements were the result of the dedication and hard work of naval personnel.

Rear Admiral Gbenah urged the naval fleet to sure all ships were seaworthy at all times for operations at any time. Two civilian employees and six personnel of the Western Naval Command were presented with awards for their service to the Ghana Navy and the Ghana Armed Forces.
