In what authorities are calling a miraculous rescue, a day-old baby has been saved from a public latrine in Kwameduakrom, Obuasi East, as a result of the swift and courageous efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The Obuasi Fire Station received a distress call at around 10:30 PM on Sunday, 20th July 2025, reporting the horrifying discovery of a newborn dumped in a public toilet facility. Within minutes, a crew led by Station Officer II Appiah Kubi rushed to the scene and carried out a delicate and dangerous rescue operation.
Equipped with an extension ladder, a firefighter descended into the depths of the latrine. After nearly an hour of intense work, the baby was safely retrieved at 11:31 PM, alive and breathing.
The infant was immediately rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) for emergency medical care.
The rescue operation has drawn widespread praise from the public and local authorities alike, with many commending the Obuasi fire crew for their bravery, professionalism, and compassion.
“This is what it means to serve with heart,” said a GNFS spokesperson. “Our team acted without hesitation, risking their own safety to save a vulnerable life. Every life matters, even the tiniest among us.”
The incident has also reignited national concern over cases of baby dumping, a tragic and persistent issue in parts of Ghana. Social media erupted with shock and outrage, alongside gratitude for the firefighters.
