Accra, Jan. 12, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Wednesday stressed the need for Ghana and Malaysia to resolve to make amends on issues that nearly strained relations between them and move ahead.
He said: “Although relations between the two countries have not been good, both countries should work to remove any issues that nearly strained their relations to make the outmost from their relationship.” President Kufuor made the call when the out-going Malaysian High Commissioner in Ghana, Mr Mohammed Alias paid a farewell call on him at the Castle, Osu.
Mr Alias, who assumed duty in October 20002, is leaving after two years duty tour.
President Kufuor said Malaysia had immense opportunities that most developing countries could benefit from and although Ghana and Malaysia had independence within the same period, “most developing countries such as Ghana are intrigued and enchanted and want to go the same way like Malaysia in their developmental efforts”.
He said it was in line with such determination that the President’s Special Initiative (PSI) on Oil Palm had within two years cultivated about 15,000 hectares nation-wide.
President Kufuor sympathised with countries that suffered from the Tsunami disaster and pledged the Government’s commitment to assist in the international efforts to rehabilitate the victims.
“Whatever efforts we make it is the intention behind the efforts but not the quantum”, he said.
Mr Alias said there had been tremendous improvement in Ghana’s socio-economic development and there was bright future for the country. He expressed appreciation to President Kufuor for his assistance and co-operation during his duty tour and congratulated on his success in Election 2004.
