Ghana introduces Peacejam to Liberia

PeaceJam Ghana on Saturday 17th December, 2016 launched the Liberia chapter of PeaceJam in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

The establishment of the programme was facilitated by the Gbowee Peace Foundation founded by the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner of Liberia Leymah Gbowee.

The ceremony which was held at the St. Theresa’s convent was witnessed by Liberia’s peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, a representative of PeaceJam Ghana Mr. Wisdom Addo who doubles as the executive director of the West Africa Centre for Peace Foundation, youth and sports minister of Liberia Mr. Saah Charles Ntow and his predecessor among other dignitaries.

The occasion also marked the first PeaceJam slam held in Liberia.

Speaking at the event, the 2011 peace prize winner urged the youth to commit to peace and civil engagements.

PeaceJam is an international education programme built around peace prize laureates who work with the youth to help pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody.

The programme sparks commitment to justice and peace, social responsibility, academic excellence and other values that seeks to inspire young people and make them transformational leaders who will cherish changing themselves and society for the better.

Leymah Gbowee won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for leading a women’s peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War.

She travels the world speaking to audiences about gender-based violence and women-led peace-building in conflict countries. She is the founder and president of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and a co-founder of the Women Peace and Security Network Africa.
