Ghana Immigration Launches Operation to Clear Street Children at Kaneshie and Abossey Okai

Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officials have begun a targeted operation at Kaneshie and Abossey Okai aimed at removing street children and their adult guardians from major public spaces.

The move, according to the GIS, forms part of broader efforts to tackle irregular migration and improve public safety in Accra’s central business districts. Authorities say the increasing presence of street children in these areas poses both security and humanitarian concerns.

Officials indicate that some of the children, many of whom are believed to have migrated from neighbouring countries, are often found in vulnerable conditions and may be victims of trafficking or exploitation.

The ongoing exercise includes identifying guardians accompanying the children and working with social welfare services to determine appropriate interventions.

This operation follows recent calls by civil society groups for coordinated action to address the growing number of homeless children in Accra.
