President John Mahama says his government has not entered into an International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme to bailout Ghana from current economic challenges.
He told participants at the ongoing four-day national economic forum in Akosombo that government has not presented a programme to the IMF which will form the basis for the economic strategies being developed to fix the country’s economic challenges.
President Mahama said it therefore saddens him that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would decide to boycott the forum due to reports of an economic programme being submitted to the IMF.
The NPP leadership had stated in a statement on Monday that “Information available to us suggest that the NDC government has already adopted a set of reforms between 2014 and 2017 (including the retrenchment of workers) and has communicated same in its policy document to the IMF titled ‘ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL POLICIES FOR THE MEDIUM TERM’ dated 14th April 2014.
“This document contains what the government describes as “home grown policies” was formally submitted to the IMF during the recent Spring Meetings in Washington DC”.
But the president said such claims should not form the basis for the NPP to exclude itself from what he considers an important event devoid of partisanship.
President Mahama said it was time Ghanaians came to a common ground to agree on what should be the appropriate way to find sustainable solutions to the country’s developmental challenges.
