Accra (GAR), June 25, – Ghana has drawn the attention of the United Nations to the unfulfilled commitments to conventions in areas including pollution emissions, provision of adequate financial resources and the transfer of environmentally sound technologies. ”We take no pride in cataloguing these failures, but this is only to keep faith with current realities and set priorities for the future,” Mr J. E. Afful, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, said. He was delivering a speech at the 19th special session of the UN General Assembly held in New York to review the implementation of Agenda 21. The commitments were made with respect to many critical areas of Agenda 21 which relate to environmental issues. At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, two major issues were achieved, namely, to halt and reverse the negative impact of human behaviour on the physical environment, and to promote sustainable economic development in all countries. Mr Afful said the UN special session must confront the rude fact that the global environment is no better now than it was when they met in Rio five years ago.
