Ghana determined to make Gas Pipeline project operational-Kufuor

Accra, Feb.25, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday said more action was needed to make the West Africa Gas Pipeline Project operational.

He said it was very urgent and crucial to the Sub-Region and more action was required to put it on stream and appealed to development partners to offer the needed assistance.

President Kufuor made the appeal when a three-man delegation from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.

He gave the assurance that Ghana would make the necessary efforts to contribute her quota to make the project a reality.

Mr Mats Karlson, World Bank Country Director in Ghana, who accompanied the delegation, told newsmen that since the past year the Bank and the Government had been engaged in discussions in the energy sector to review the generation and distribution of effective energy in the country.

He commended the Government for its energy policy reforms, which, he said, were in the right direction for macro-economic development. Mr Karlson said the main areas of the discussions were on the Gas Project and the Aboadze Thermal Plant.

Mr Morgan Landy, Principal Investment Officer of IFC, said the corporation was actively involved in the restructuring of the Volta River Authority (VRA) especially with regard to the thermal plant. He said about three million dollars would be invested in the expansion of the plant.
