Akyem Oda, Sept 13, GNA – The Ghana Association of the Blind (GAB) has urged the government to have the political will and commitment to fully implement the policies of inclusive education as another way of integrating persons with disabilities into mainstream society.
“Adequate adaptive learning materials must also be made available for the use of the disabled learners for their effective participation in the classroom instructional programme”.
These were contained in a communique the GAB issued after its 23rd Biennial National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi.
GAB said schools designated for inclusive education must be equipped with user-friendly facilities to promote physical and sporting activities among the disabled children so that they would not feel isolated.
The communiqu=E9, which was signed by Mr Yaw Ofori Debrah, President of the association, said teachers involved in the practice of inclusive education must be well trained and more importantly sufficiently motivated for their retention and effective work. The GAB called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to educate and sensitize parents of children with special needs and the communities at large to appreciate and understand the inclusive education concept.
