The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has suspended its ongoing recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra following a tragic stampede that claimed six lives on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
According to a statement from GAF, the suspension aims to prioritise the safety of applicants and allow for better coordination of future recruitment activities.
The incident occurred when thousands of hopeful young Ghanaians crowded the stadium in an attempt to secure entry into the Armed Forces. The overwhelming turnout and heavy pushing at the gates quickly spiralled into chaos, leaving several people injured and others dead.
Military officials confirmed that six fatalities had been recorded, while 28 others were taken to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency care. Five of the injured remain in intensive care, with 12 others described as being in serious but stable condition.
The tragedy unfolded during an extended phase of the nationwide recruitment drive, which had been prolonged by one week after technical issues disrupted the initial application process that was due to end on October 31, 2025.
The Armed Forces assured the public that investigations are underway and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The recruitment exercise will remain on hold until further notice.
