The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has debunked media reports alleging that Brigadier General Michael Opoku was arrested by security operatives for illegal possession of ammunition.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by Captain V.A. Arhin, Acting Director-General of Public Relations, the military high command explained that checks with all relevant security agencies and investigative bodies had found no evidence to support the claims.
“As of now, enquiries from the various Security Agencies and National Investigative Authorities have not corroborated the alleged arrest,” the statement clarified.
The Armed Forces further confirmed that Brigadier General Opoku remains a serving officer in good standing and is not under arrest for any offence.
Reiterating its commitment to upholding the rule of law, the GAF stressed that any soldier found culpable of criminal activity would be dealt with under due process. “The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that, notwithstanding this false publication, any military personnel involved in any crime will be subjected to the same legal procedures as any other citizen,” it added.
Describing the reports as entirely fabricated, the GAF urged the public to disregard them and cautioned against the spread of misinformation. “The Ghana Armed Forces states categorically that the story is false and should be ignored. We urge all to desist from engaging in disinformation activities,” the release concluded.
