Lome, Togo, May 30, GNA – Ghana and Togo are negotiating on contractual differences in the proposed trans national water project under which water would be supplied from the Volta Lake at Sogakope to Togo.
Ghana and financiers of the project want potable water to be supplied as against Togo’s preference for raw water.
Mr Kwabena Mensah Bonsu, Ghana’s Ambassador to Togo announced this when Chiefs from Aflao paid a courtesy call on him in Lome on Tuesday. The chiefs’ visit was to congratulate Mr Bonsu, who is also Dean of the Diplomatic Corp in Togo for his leadership role to bring the Togolese government and the opposition to the negotiating table for peaced to prevail in the country.
Mr Bonsu said as soon those differences were ironed out work would begin on the project that would benefit communities along the pipelines. He said Ghana-Togo relations were very good and devoid of any mistrust, explaining that the inability of the authorities to keep their main border at Aflao opened for 24 hours was due to logistic problems. The Ambassador recalled the mistrust that characterized relations between the two countries in the past, stressing that the present government in Ghana had been cooperating with the Togolese side on all fronts, including security where even criminals could be exchanged. The chiefs, led by Togbe Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area urged the Ambassador and the Diplomatic Corp to intensify their efforts to bring lasting peace to Togo.
Togbe Fiti said instability in Togo was of great concern to his people because they shared family and economic ties with those in Togo.
