Ghana and Morocco work to deepen ties

Accra, June 20, GNA – A Moroccan investment team on Monday met their Ghanaian counterparts to explore ways to deepen bilateral trade ties for th= e mutual benefit of both countries.

The investment team that is on a trade road show to four African countries is seeking partnership in areas of agri-business, information and communication technology, among others.

Addressing the delegation, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Hannah Tetteh, said trade between the two countries was skewed in favour of Morocc= o and that Ghana required more efforts to bridge the widening trade deficit. Currently, Ghana’s imports from Morocco on average goods amount to 6= 0 million dollars annually while its exports to the North African country averaged 3 million dollars. The minister said there was need to enhance the level of trade and suggested that the two countries identify the best ways through which to link up the business communities, facilitate efforts to develop and grow existing businesses and capacities as well as improve on the livelihoods of theirs peoples.

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Trade, Abdelatif Mazzouz called for th= e establishment of a convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation between the two countries, and the activation of the signing of the Agreement of th= e Promotion and the Reciprocal Protection of Investments the two countries already signed in 2005. He said the promotion of a bilateral economic partnership between the two countries required the involvement of Moroccan and Ghanaian private sector players and stressed the need for the establishment of a legal framework in the fields of air and maritime transport
