Ghana and Morocco Scrap Visa Requirements in Landmark Deal to Boost Trade and Tourism

In a move hailed as a significant step toward African integration, Ghana and Morocco have agreed to abolish traditional visa requirements for Ghanaian travelers, replacing them with a streamlined online authorization process.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following a two-day working visit to Rabat where he held bilateral talks with his Moroccan counterpart, H.E. Nasser Bourita.

“With immediate effect, Ghanaians will no longer require traditional visas to travel to Morocco,” Hon. Ablakwa shared on his official Facebook page. “An online authorization granted within 24 hours without any embassy appointments is all that’s needed.”

The development is expected to significantly enhance travel between the two nations, which already share direct flight routes. Officials say those flights will be increased to meet anticipated demand from tourists, business people, and students eager to take advantage of the new arrangement.

“This bilateral visa waiver policy will greatly facilitate trade, tourism, and deepen people-to-people engagements between both countries,” the Minister noted.

The agreement also underscores a broader vision for pan-African unity. “The borders in Africa must not be allowed to divide us, they can be bridges of connectivity,” Ablakwa stated. “Diplomacy must make meaningful impact in the lives of the people we serve.”

The announcement was made on the eve of Eid celebrations, with the Minister extending well wishes to Ghana’s Muslim community, adding a note of unity and cultural recognition to the diplomatic breakthrough.

This visa waiver comes as part of a wider effort by both governments to strengthen bilateral relations, promote intra-African mobility, and bolster regional cooperation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
