Accra, Oct. 29, GNA – The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has designed “traffic calming” schemes which are currently being implemented on highway networks to minimise accidents due to over speeding.
Dr Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Transport, was answering a question in Parliament on Friday. He said part of the proceeds from the Road Sector Development Programme (RSDP) was being applied by the GHA to provide speed-calming devices at some settlements along the highways. Mr Stephen Amoanor Kwao, NDC-Upper Manya Krobo, wanted to know when the Ministry would consider the construction of speed ramps at Asesewa and other townships in order to minimise accidents on the Asesewa-Odumase road in the Eastern region.
The Minister said because of the winding and hilly nature of that road it was dangerous to build speed ramps.
He however said a study has been undertaken to identify black spots on the highway network and this had helped to identify 50 accident black spots including that of the Asesewa-Odumase road. He said the spots would be improved with devices that could reduce or prevent accidents on the roads.
In a related development, the Minister said the improvement of access roads to food production centres in and around Asesewa and Sekesua, was ongoing to ease transportation of produce to the market centres.
“The works involved are the construction of culverts, raising of low-lying area and sectional gravelling,” Dr Anane said in answer to a question by Mr Amoanor Kwao as to when the road network at Asesewa and Sekesua would be rehabilitated to enhance commercial activities.
