The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has denied reports that it is paying money to witnesses to ensure the alleged assault case against Black Star’s Defender, John Paintsil is dropped.
The GFA indicated that it has shown great interest in the matter because it affects the image of the Association, the country and the national team as a whole.
John Paintsil was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting his wife but has since been granted bail by the Police.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the GFA, Sonny Darra explained that, the case has a link to the Association and the image of Ghana but it has not paid any money to anyone.
“We are not paying any money; we are not paying any money. All we are doing is to play a mediatory role.”
According to Mr. Darra, “anything that emanates from any of our players that has got the potential of bringing the name of Ghana and Ghana football into disrepute, we have got some role in it.”
He noted that the GFA considers all of its players and their respective families “as part of a family so if they have issues that we think that has the potential of damaging the reputation not only of these footballers and the reputation of the country as a whole, I think that we’ve got a role to play.”
Mr. Darra however admitted that any individual who commits a crime must be made to face the necessary consequences but added that “but the nature of the event must not be skewed.
He further mentioned that the GFA is worried about the way in which the matter was reported saying, “it was worrying that somebody who was actually not at the event will even go the extent of suggesting that stabbing the woman was perceived for us to jump walls when there are no walls and in between the houses.”
