GETFund to allocate GH¢8.3 million to UMaT

Tarkwa (W/R) March 21, – GNA – University of Mines and Technology

(UMaT), Tarkwa would be allocated GH¢8.3 million this year to implement its projects. Mr. Fosuaba Mensah Banahene, Administrator, Ghana Education Trust

Fund (GETFund) announced this in an interview with the Press at Tarkwa during an inspection of on-going projects at UMaT after an annual meeting of Board of Trustees of GETFund held at Tarkwa. The projects included a multi-purpose Auditorium, campus roads, Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge, Bungalows for lecturers and Students’ hostels, among others. He said GETFund’s financial allocations to the Universities are supplementary support to Central Government’s funding of Universities in

Ghana and not solely to be used for undertaking all infrastructural and other technical as well as logistics projects. This, he said, calls for supports from corporate entities and other stakeholders to help fund Education in the country. Mr. Banahene said his outfit was satisfied with the tremendous improvement in the on-going projects in the University except a few ones

which needed to be put on fast track and commended the University Authorities for the judicious use of the funds allocated to them. Prof. Daniel Mireku Gyimah, Vice-Chancellor, UMaT acknowledged that UMaT was young and now developing and as such needs massive infrastructural development to achieve its vision of becoming a Centre of Excellence in Ghana and Africa for producing world class professionals in the field of Geo-Sciences Mining , Technology and related disciplines. He also called for more support from GETFund, and other bodies with consideration and appreciation of the youngest public University in the country’s inadequate classrooms, hostels and other facilities and respond to them. 21 March 08
