Akropong-Akuapem, Aug. 20, GNA – Mrs Ewurabena Ahwoi, Eastern Regional Director of Education, on Thursday warned that the Ghana Education Service (GES) would not tolerate any excuse from beneficiaries of the access course to teacher training colleges should they refuse posting to deprived areas.
“No reason, be it on health grounds or whatever, would be accepted when it comes to posting of such teachers. It is because the GES needs teachers there that you are being given the opportunity to meet the requirement of training colleges admissions.”
Mrs Ahwoi, who was addressing the opening ceremony of a six-week access course for girls’ entry into teacher training colleges in the southern sector at Akropong-Akuapem, said any participant who was not prepared to work in the deprived areas should “leave that opportunity for those who are prepared”.
The programme, which is for candidates without the requisite admission qualification to enter the training colleges, is being conducted for 800 girls in the southern sector at the Presbyterian Training College (PTC) at Akropong-Akuapem, to address the gender parity in the teaching profession.
She said this year’s access course would focus mainly on the increase of the intake of female French students into the training colleges to meet the demand of French teachers in the deprived areas. The Principal of the College, Mr Emmanuel Kingsley Osei, commended the government for the opportunity offered the young ladies to facilitate their admission into the colleges.
He appealed to the GES and the GETFund to assist the College to expand its facilities.
