GES warns SHS girls against being lured by men with mobile phones

Investigation by the Ghana Education Service in the Upper West Region has revealed that senior high school girls in the region are being lured into relationships with men, including married men.

According the Regional Education Directorate, its survey has showed an alarming rate at which the school girls are being lured with mobile phones by the men, and has warned against the practice.

The regional director, Madam Patricia Ayeko, who made the revelation to TV3 said the men buy mobile phones for the girls who later in the night sneak out of their school dormitories to meet with these men.

She was speaking at a Kidafest event organised by the St Louis Educational Complex at Wa, she said in one school which she did not name, they identified a total of 55 girls in boarding house who were possessing mobile phones.

A total of 45 male students also had mobile phones.

Madam Ayeko said the use of mobile phones by the students is not only against the GES rules and regulations but is also to be blamed for the poor academic performance of the students in recent times.

She has therefore advised stakeholders to be careful about the practice and warned men engaged in such practice put a stop to it or face the law when they are caught.

The Kidafest event was aimed at helping the students to unearth their talents.

In all, 9 selected primary and junior high schools were invited across the region to participate in various disciplines including spelling UCmas, singing and dancing to traditional and modern music.

Award winning singer, Noella Wiyaala who graced the occassion entertained the students with some of his hit songs, and encouraged them to exhibit their talents without fear.
