Ms Anita Neequaye, a 25 year- old lady with a condition called Muscular dystrophy (MD), has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), to pay more attention to students with special needs who partake in examination.
MD is a group of muscle diseases that weaken the musculoskeletal system and hamper locomotion (walking or moving).
The disease is characterised by progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in muscle proteins, and the death of muscle cells and tissue.
Anita’s condition makes her slow in doing things and her speech is also hampered in a way even though she could talk, however, she is able to walk.
Ms. Neequaye in an interview on Wednesday said she could not do her best in the West Africa Senior High Certificate Examination because she was not given enough time to write the exams.
She said: “I am good in English language, I have a Diploma in Business and IT skills from NIIT but I am unable to get a job.”
“I have applied for jobs and have even been invited for an interview once but I was not contacted again” Ms Neequaye said her disability is making her a liability to her family even though she could work and appealed to businesses and organisations with IT department to consider her for employment.
“Right Now I volunteer at an Autism Centre in Tema but I have a desire to further my education to higher level and I need to save some money to enable me do that,” she added.
