Germany offers Ghanaians scholarship

Accra, Nov. 17, GNA – The German Academic Exchange Service, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) has launched two new scholarship programmes for students for 2005.
The special programmes jointly run by the Helmholtz and Leibniz Associations and the DAAD are intended for highly qualified foreign doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, a statement from the German Embassy in Ghana said on Tuesday.
Helmholtz Fellows do research in the fields of Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Transport and Space at a Helmholtz Association Research Centre and can use the outstanding scientific infrastructure, which the Helmholtz Centres maintain.
Fellowships are awarded for between 12 months (post-doctoral studies in Germany) and up to a maximum of 36 months (PhD students). The statement said applicants must be able to prove their excellent study or research achievements, completed their studies or research with a university degree or with a doctorate (in 2003 or 2004), be not older than 32 years and 36 years for post-doctoral and have an excellent knowledge of English or German. The next application deadline is December 15, 2004.
The DAAD Leibniz Scholarship Programme for Doctoral Candidates and Post-Doctorals is open to graduates, PhD students and Post-Docs aiming to carry out research work at one of the participating Leibniz Institutes. Scholarships can be awarded for a period from six to 36 months. It is also possible to gain a doctorate in Germany. The statement said application is open to excellently qualified university graduates, who hold a Master’s degree at the time they commence the supported research or who have already gained their doctorate/PhD.
The most important selection criteria are the previous study and research achievements in one of the research fields of the participating Leibniz Institutes.
German language skills are generally required. In the natural sciences and in engineering disciplines, in particular when English is spoken at the host institute, proof of good English language skills may also be accepted. Age limit is 32 years and 42 years for post-doctoral. The next application deadline is January 15 2005.
