GCPP appeals to Dan Lartey to “cool down”

Accra, Oct. 5, GNA – The Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) on Tuesday appealed to its leader, Mr Dan Lartey, to “cool down and return to the folds of the Grand Coalition” as its Chairman.

A statement issued in Accra by Mr Gilbert Bannor, Vice-Chairman of the GCPP, noted that Mr Lartey had told a television programme that the Party had pulled out of the Coalition with immediate effect after he lost the vote for Flag Bearer of the three-party Coalition to Dr Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention. Dr Mahama subsequently chose Mr Danny Ofoci-Atta of every Accountable Ghanaian Living Everywhere (EAGLE) Party as his running mate.

The statement said no written statement had as yet come from Mr Lartey to the effect that the GCPP had pulled out of the Coalition. “However, it is pertinent to inform the general public that the decision of his withdrawal from the Coalition had not been discussed by the Executive Council of the GCPP, whose earlier activities on behalf of the Party as a whole culminated in the birth and subsequent growth of the Grand Coalition.

“From this angle, therefore, Mr Dan Lartey’s action could be viewed as action taken on the spur of the moment, hence completely unilateral.” The statement said in the view of the Party the Coalition was in tact until further notice.

“Legally, the GCPP cannot easily pull out because of the various documents it has voluntarily signed to bring the Grand Coalition into fruition. A court action hangs on the neck of the Party if it persists on going solo.”
