GBC DG urges youth to plant trees

Tema, June 04, GNA – Ms Eva Lokko, Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Friday, called on the youth to make judicious use of the environment to benefit present and succeeding generations.

Launching a tree planting campaign for five schools in Tema, she stressed the need for the youth to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees.

The schools are Grace Academy, Presbyterian Secondary, First Star Academy, Ramaniyya and Methodist Day Secondary.

The campaign, which was organised by the Ghana National Scholarship Beneficiaries Association under the theme, “trees: our survival, our life,” was sponsored by Fan Milk Limited.

She enumerated the uses of trees and its importance to the socio-economic development and said it was not only for beautification as well as medicinal but also served as windbreak to prevent desertification.

Ms Lokko urged adults to educate children on its usefulness so that they developed interest in planting trees to make Ghana “green” for the future.

Mr Baffour Akwasi Oppong, Coordinator of the Association expressed the Scholarship Beneficiaries’ determination to ensure that the youth made conscious efforts to plant trees. Students of the five schools were given various species of seedlings to plant in their school compound and within their communities. 04 June 05
