GBA wades into court commentary controversy

The Ghana Bar Association has cautioned its members to show circumspection when commenting on the election petition case before the Supreme Court.

Three individuals including a journalist have so far been sanctioned by the court with two facing incarceration.

The GBA, is however, worried some lawyers are as guilty as those already sanctioned by the court.

President of the Bar Association, Nene Amegatcher tells Joy News lawyers have a greater responsibility to ensure the right message is sent to the public.

“We play our role in assisting the judges to come to the right conclusion that would be beneficial and we ensure that whatever the judges come out with we will all support and obey.

He said: “Lawyers are not suppose to run commentaries while the case is going on, with the intention of abusing or influencing the mind of supporters of a particular party and preparing them not to accept the results or not. It is against the ethics of the profession and the Ghana Bar Association is worried.”
