Gangsters assault police detective

Akim Swedru, May 11, GNA – A student of the Central University College, Accra, who teamed up with six others and assaulted a detective police officer to prevent him from arresting their friend, had been sentenced to two million-cedi fine by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court on Monday.

Kobena Nyantakyi, who pleaded guilty to three counts of assault, aiding and abetting a criminal to escape arrest, would go to prison for six months in default.

Two other accomplices, Kwaku Abadu Asare, a 20-year-old unemployed and Kwasi Nyarko, a 23-year-old draughtsman, were placed in police custody pending further investigations.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Reindorf Agyeman told the court that in April the police at Akim Oda received a report that one Nimako, 17-old second hand cloths dealer, had assaulted a woman. The accused and his friends assaulted a detective police officer who was sent to arrest Nimako during which they snatched the handcuff from him and bolted with it.

Investigations later led to the arrest of Nyantakyi and the two others.
