Galamsey operator fined for stealing tyres

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has fined a 35 year-old galamsey operator, Prosper Okpata GH¢ 360.00 for conspiring with three others to steal four Michelin lorry tyres valued at GH¢ 12,204.00 or in default serve 9 months imprisonment in hard labour.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but at the end of prosecution Prosper was found guilty of the offence.

Prosecuting, Police Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the Court, presided over by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante that the complainants were security officers of Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa mine.

According to Inspector Amponsah, on January 26, last year around 3:00 am, the security officers were on their usual patrols within the company’s concession and on reaching the UBI area, they spotted the accused together with Kwame and two others now at large, rolling a Michelin lorry tyre each belonging to the Engineers and planners, through a nearby bush.

The Prosecution said the accused persons on seeing the security officers, abandoned the tyres and took to their heels, but the first accused person was arrested and handed over to the police.

Inspector Amponsah said Prosper admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and mentioned one Kwame and two others as his accomplices.
