The GaDangme Council has expressed grave concern about the termination of the appointment of Mr Seth Ago Adjetey as Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). It said the unceremonious removal of Mr Ago Adjetey following a divisive tribally inspired campaign of vilification and mudslinging, therefore came as a shock to the council. A statement issued in Accra and signed by its President, S.K. B. Asante said the termination seems to confirm that Ghana has a long way to go to establish a nation of one people with one destiny, adding that the cherished dreams of the enlightened in the country led by the President are being frustrated.
“Mr Ago Adjetey inaugurated the Obonu FM station to give the people of GaDangme region a radio station as other regions have. The act, which conforms to policy, appears to have infuriated some short, sighted Ghanaians and has resulted in the subtle and open harassment resulting in the removal of Mr Ago Adjetey”, the statement alleged. It said the GaDangme Council fully endorses the establishment of Obonu FM and extends its full support to the station because the people in the Ga Dangme region like all other regions in Ghana also deserve their own radio station, which will communicate to them in their own languages, Ga and GaDangme.
The statement said “at a time when languages spoken by less than one million people like Corniah are being promoted by grants from the European Union, Mr Ago Adjetey’s action followed the line of present day enlightenment. The GaDangme Council will continue to vigorously resist the marginalisation of GaDangme languages and culture”.
It observed that the concern of the GaDangme Council is the way Mr Ago Adjetey was removed from office. It is the belief of the council that the puerile way in which ministers and heads of major institutions are removed from office belong to the past. “It is also hoped that the authorities in Ghana are not incapable of that sophistication employed in established democracies to remove from office, high officials who have served the country well and have not fallen foul of the law”, the statement added.
