The Ga-East Chiefs Association has expressed its displeasure over what it called “unsavoury and misplaced comments” by the Member of Parliament for Madina-Abokobi, Mr. Amadu Sorogho.
The chiefs said the MP made the unsavoury comments against the chiefs concerning the choice of a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the newly created La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly.
The MP is reported to have declared openly in his inaugural speech for the municipality that “the chiefs have openly thrown their support behind one of the candidates, Nii Samuel Oblejumah Sowah, a former employee of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
“We will not sit down for the chiefs to impose an undesirable candidate on us”, declared the MP.
The Chairman of the Association, Nii Samuel Mohenu told news men during a meeting with the chiefs to register their sentiments at Abokobi in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the chiefs, the MP was reported to have stated that the candidate the Association was supporting was sacked from the GNFS while working as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Service and could not be supported to become an MCE”.
Meanwhile, a letter dated April 05, 2012 and made available to the Ghana News Agency which Mr. Sorogho was among the signatories as chairman of the Fire Service Council (FSC), said Nii Sowah tendered in his resignation letter on January 16, 2012, which was signed by the Acting Chief Fire Officer, Brigadier Gen. J. B. Guyiri. It said Nii Sowah resigned from the GNFS effective May 11, 2012.
The chiefs said upon examining Nii Sowah’s credentials, he was found to be one of the qualified candidates to contest for the office, hence they (chiefs) could not be faulted.
Speaking to the GNA later in an interview, Nii Sowah expressed shock and dismay over the statement made by Mr. Sorogho because he was a signatory prior to his resignation and for him to refer to him as was sacked connoting he might had done something wrong at the GNFS, was nothing short of denigrating his hard won reputation.
On the way forward, the chiefs said they would seek audience with the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Member of the Council of State to find out if the Association should be described as such.**
