Ga East Assembly fails to elect PM

Abokobi (G/A), Nov. 16, GNA – The newly created Ga East District Assembly (GEDA) on Tuesday failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) because neither of the two contestants was able to obtain the required two-thirds vote in the secret ballot held at Abokobi.

A new election is, therefore, slated for next week.

There was a deadlock after Tuesday’s voting because the two candidates – Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed and Nii Samuel Adjetey – polled nine and six votes respectively, falling short of the two-thirds of the 15 ballots cast.

Mr Prosper Dodi, Ga District Electoral Officer, supervised the election.

Mr Justice George Aflah Aryeetey, a High Court Judge, earlier swore the 14 new Assembly Members made up nine elected members and five government appointees into office. They took the Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy.

Justice Aryeetey advised the Members to abide by the rules and regulations of the Assembly to ensure the smooth take-off of the new District.

Sheikh Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, who also doubles as Acting District Chief Executive for GEDA, called on the Members to be disciplined in their endeavours to enhance the total development of the area.

He urged the two contestants to soften their entrenched positions on the election since this would not augur well for the new district.
