Tamale, Aug. 19, GNA – A Tamale Circuit Court on Tuesday sentenced Sambo Talley, a 23 year-old Fulani herdsman, from Burkina Faso to a five-year jail term in hard labour, for stealing a cow belonging to another herdsman from Buipe in the Central Gonja District . The court, presided over by Mr John Nabarase, ordered that the Burkinabe who was convicted on his own plea, be repatriated after the jail term.
The prosecution told the court that on May 13 this year, the complainant, Mr Yalley Isiyaku who lives at Mpaha junction near Buipe, was informed by his grandson, Jinka and caretaker of his cattle, about the theft of one of his cattle. Mr Isiyaku, the prosecution said, communicated the information from his grandson to members of his community and after a series of enquiry he received a phone call from an informant that he (informant) had seen the cow in the possession of the accused. The complainant accompanied by his grandson and the informant went to the house of the accused. On seeing them, the accused took to his heels but the three gave him a chase and caught him. They later retrieved the cow and sent the accused to the police station. The accused pleaded for leniency saying that it was the first time he had committed such an offence. 19 Aug. 08
