Fulani headman jailed 18 months for stealing cow

Winneba (C/R) Feb. 26 GNA-A Winneba District Magistrate’s court on Friday jailed a Fulani headman, Adramani Awudu 18 months in hard labour for stealing a cow at Gyatekrom near Winneba.

He pleaded guilty and the court, presided over by Mr. Michael Clement Dorieku sentenced him accordingly. Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector William Kwame Akannah, told the court that on February 8, 2007, the complainant, whose name was only given as Mamudu, a Fulani headman went to his kraal at Gyatekrom to take the cattle for grazing.

He said, the complainant detected that one of the female cows was missing so he organised his brothers and the other fulanis in the area to assist him look for the missing cow.´

The prosecution said during the search they saw that the cow tied to a tree some distance away from the kraal and laid ambush to look for the person who did that.

He said within a few hours period they saw a vehicle together with three persons including the accused coming for the cow and when they attempted to arrest them Awudu and the two accomplices took to their heels.

The prosecution said the driver of the vehicle whose name was being withheld for security reasons was arrested and he mentioned Awudu and the two others during police investigation.

Chief Inspector Akannah said Awudu was on February 15, 2007 arrested in his hideout at Winneba.

He later admitted to the police of having committed the offence and named Jibril Ibrahim and Atta rpt. Atta both from Buadua in the Eastern Region as his accomplices.

The prosecution said the police are looking for Ibrahim and Atta but the driver is now a prosecution witness in the case. 26 Feb. 07
