Nkoranza (B/A), Sept. 1, GNA – Mr Kwame Amporfo-Twumasi, Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South has arranged fee free vacation classes for the youth and students of the area.
About 450 students have so far registered with the programme, which is expected to last for a month.
Mr Samuel Adutwum and Paul Adjei-Yeboah, organisers of the classes disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at the Anglican Junior High School at Nkoranza, where the classes are being held. The participants are from Senior High Schools, Commercial and Technical Schools, Vocational Institutions and unsuccessful Senior High School graduates preparing to re-sit this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The organisers said the main subjects being taught are English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, which most students in the area find very difficult to pass.
Mr Adutwum and Mr Adjei-Yeboah, both teachers, commended Mr Amporfo-Twumasi, who is the Deputy Minister for Energy, for his foresight, as the exercise had helped checked the students against roaming the streets and indulging in social vices. They expressed appreciation to the parents who often visited the centre to encourage their wards and boost the morale of the teachers. Mr Yaw Yiadom Konadu, a tutor of Drobo Senior High School, and one of the teachers teaching English Language at the Centre, noted that the students had attached seriousness to the programmes as they were punctual to classes and also comported themselves during classes hours. He commended the MP for considering the plight of the students of Nkoranza and appealed to other MPs to emulate his example to help accelerated development in their areas.
Three of the participants, Master Kenneth Attah, Miss Margaret Kwarteng-Pokuaa and Miss Sarah Osei, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency lauded the programme and expressed the hope that the exercise would be sustained.
