Cape Coast, Nov. 28, GNA – The Center for Environmental Impact Analysis (CEIA), has donated more than 60 seedlings of Acacia to four schools in the Central Region towards environmental protection and the beautification of their compounds.
They are ST. Lawrence JHS, Kwegyir Aggrey School, Jubilee Catholic School, all in Cape Coast, and Etsiapa Memorial Methodist School in Elmina. The Executive Director of CEIA, Mr Samuel Obiri, told the GNA that there was the need for more trees to be planted in the country to save the ozone layer from depletion as trees absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.
He said the NGO had launched a five-year Environmental Educational Programme to enable the youth to learn about issues such as Climate Change, Environmental Degradation, Deforestation and Waste Management. Children in Primary and Junior High Schools, he said, were its target groups because they were the future custodians of the environment. Mr. Obiri said the theme for the Programme is: “Education for Sustainable Development, Training Ghanaian Youth in Waste Management and Climate Change.”
The donation of the seedlings is also in line with the programme. He said series of forums would be held for schools in the two areas while materials would be provided for the schools to be abreast of environmental issues. 26 Nov. 10
