Four remanded for stealing GT underground cables

Accra, Feb. 12, GNA – A Circuit Court in Accra on Monday remanded into prison custody four security men for allegedly stealing underground cables belonging to Ghana Telecom (GT).

Cephas Kpewu, Francis Boateng, Dickson Ahiadeke and Godfred Nyarko are being held on charges of conspiracy, causing unlawful damage and stealing.

The four who pleaded not guilty would reappear on February 19. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Johnson K. Anim said on December 12, last year, the Police had information that some people were carrying some telephone cables away from Ghana Telecom Cable Yard at Otanor, East Legon, in Accra.

The prosecution said the Police moved to the scene and saw Kpewu offering some GT underground cables cut into pieces for sale to a scrap dealer.

Kpewu was arrested and in his caution statement to the Police, he admitted the offence and mentioned Boateng, Ahiadeke, Nyarko and Atta Lambert as his accomplices. Lambert is said to be on the run. The prosecution said soon after Kpewu’s accomplices heard that he had been arrested they went into hiding. On January 19, this year Boateng was picked up from his hideout but he denied taking part in the deal saying that he received 150,000 cedis from Nyarko after a previous operation. The prosecution said on January 30, and February 10, Ahaideke and Nyarko were also arrested. 12 Feb. 07
