Four farmers before court for stealing sheep

Nkawie (Ash), Oct. 20, GNA – A circuit court at Nkawie on Monday imposed fines totaling six million cedis on four farmers for stealing a sheep valued at more than one million cedis.

The four, Kwaku Yeboah, 26, Allasan Moro alias Sakora, 40, Kofi Allasan, 48, and Mohammed Issah, 33, all pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing and will serve six months prison sentence each in default of the fine of 1.5 million cedis each.

The court presided over by Mr Beresford Sarfo Acquah ordered them to pay 250,000 cedis each as compensation to the owner of the sheep or would in default serve two months imprisonment each. Police Inspector George Letsah told the court that one Yaw Asiedu, the complainant and the accused persons were all farmers at Nagori, near Nyinahin.

He said the complainant who reared sheep detected on October 11, this year that his fattest sheep had been stolen from the pen. Inspector Letsah said the complainant therefore conducted his own investigations but it proved futile and so he caused a gong-gong to be beaten and threatened that he would invoke a curse on the one who stole the sheep.

He said on October 14, Kwaku Yeboah, one of the accused persons on hearing the threat, went to the house of the complainant and confessed to stealing the sheep together with the other accused persons. Inspector Letsah said following this confession, the four farmers were arrested and interrogation they admitted slaughtering the animal and sharing it amongst themselves.
