Sunyani, Nov 24, GNA – Four more districts are yet to be named in addition to the 19 new districts created to bring government to the doorsteps of the people to enhance the decentralization process, Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister said on Monday.
He told a news conference at Sunyani that Kpando District would be split into North and South, Wa East District to be created, Tano to be split into Tano South and North and Sissala District to be divided into Sissala East and West.
The Regional Minister held the press conference in view of the agitations by the people of Duayaw Nkwanta and Prang in the region because according them their request for the areas to be made new districts had not been granted by the government after the recent publication of 19 new districts, including five in Brong Ahafo.
He said three additional municipalities, namely Sunyani, Techiman and Ho, would be created, bringing their number to seven, adding that “the necessary paper work was being done at the Attorney General’s office”.
Nana Seinti expressed regret about the demonstrations on Friday and Saturday at Duayaw Nkwanta and Prang and advised the people to exercise restraint and not to do any thing that would disturb the peace in their areas.
”Citing a district capital in a town does not necessary mean that such a town will benefit more than the others,” the Regional Minister said and gave the assurance that the government would ensure that no town is left out in development.
Commenting on the disturbance at Prang, he said he was at a function at Atebubu when he had information that the people of Prang had blocked the main road from Kumasi to Yeji, preventing vehicles to and from Yeji.
A team of police personnel was therefore dispatched to the area to ensure peace but an irate crowd shattered the windscreen of their pick up. A second security agency vehicle suffered the same fate.
Nana Seinti said the people had threatened to attack all government workers in the town adding that the Regional Security Council would hold a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, November 25, to review the situation and ensure that people in the region are protected.
