Accra, Sept.26, GNA – Third Millennio Foundation, an international humanitarian and environmental organisation based in Italy and the United Kingdom has offered to finance a waste-to-energy project in the country.
The Foundation is offering an initial grant of 185 million dollars to cover the first phase of a 100-megawatt output waste-to energy power plant under the project, to be executed by Tropical Energy Resources, a wholly owned private Ghanaian power generation company.
A statement from the Ministry of Information signed by Nana Ohene Ntow, Government Spokesman, Finance and Economy, said the President of the Third Millennio foundation, Dr Antonio Montella announced the grant offer at two separate meetings with the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kwadwo Adjei Darko and the Minister of Environment and Science, Professor Kassim Kasanga in Accra.
The statement quoted Dr Montella as saying that the interest of his foundation in financing waste-to-energy project on grant basis is to reinvest the profits of the venture in social development environmental and ecological regeneration activities in the country.
Social and environmental projects to be financed under the Foundation’s re-investment programme include community health and sanitation, environmental and ecological regeneration, provision of community water, and support for the education sector.
The statement said Mr Adjei-Darko pledged the total co-operation from government for the realisation of the various projects under the grant arrangement.
Professor Kassim Kassanga commended the Foundation, describing it as genuine partner in the country’s development.
Meanwhile, Dr Montella has also offered to finance the construction of 50 boreholes in some communities without potable water in response to a discussion during his meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana and Togo, Archbishop George Kocherry in Accra.
Archbishop Kocherry during discussion drew attention to the acute drinking water problem in most rural communities and the attendant health hazards that such lack posed to the communities.
