Forum On Education In Accra

Participants at an education conference in Accra for NGOs have called for a review of the composition of the District Education Oversight and School Management Committees to allow for more flexibility and gender balance in its affairs. The Conference, organized by the Ghana NGO Forum on Education, was under the theme ” Sharing Community-based approaches in basic education.” The participants called for intensification of in-service training programmes and supervision of teachers to ensure cost-effectiveness and quality education. They were of the view that the supply of education materials to schools is woefully inadequate and said this must be increased to enable the children to work independently. The participants called for increased government support to NGOs and an action plan to foster greater government – NGO collaboration. They suggested that the use of local languages should be encouraged at basic schools.
