Forum for peaceful elections at Ahafo-Ano District

Tepa (Ash), Oct 25, GNA- Mr. Akwasi Adu-Poku, the District Chief Executive for Ahafo-Ano North, has observed that no nation could progress in the midst of civil strive, hence the need for politicians to guide against acts that could mar the peaceful conduct of Election 2004. He made the appeal at a forum organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)on the theme: “Political Tolerance: an Ingredient for Peaceful Elections” for political activists and opinion leaders in the District.

Mr. Adu-Poku explained that politics was not about war but on issues that promoted socio-economic development. He called on the electorate to tolerate divergent political views and not to allow a few people who are pursuing their selfish interests to undermine national cohesion and stability.

Mr. Peter Hasting Mensah, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE, cautioned against the destruction of party paraphernalia and explained that the act constituted an electoral offence.

Mr. Joseph Dennis Opoku, the District Police Commander, asked the political parties to adhere to the provisions of the Public Order Act that regulated the organisation of all political activities.

Mr. Asante Boahene, the District Electoral Officer, appealed to the political parties to observe all the rules and regulations relating to the conduct of elections, and have confidence in the ability of the Electoral Commission to conduct a free and fair elections.

The District chairmen of the New Patriotic Party, the National Democratic Congress, the People’s National Convention and the Convention People’s Party pledged their commitment towards peaceful polls in December 7.
