Kumasi, Jan 17, GNA – All 49 suspects arrested in connection with the clash between some Kotokoli youth and indigenous people at Jamasi in the Afigya-Sekyere district were remanded in prison custody when they appeared before an Asante-Mampong circuit court on Monday. Their pleas were not taken.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander Frank Adu-Poku, said the clash was between some Kotokoli youth at the Jamasi Zongo and some indigenous people in the town, and not between Christian and Moslems as reported by a section of the media.
The Regional Police Commander said the region needed peace. “Much as indigenous people are not expected to harass non-indigenous people; non-indigenous people must also not disturb the peace of the other,” he added.
Following the incident, the Regional Co-ordinating Council met the leadership of the two parties and advised them to maintain the peace in the area.
Mr Adu-Poku said the clash was related to a misunderstanding on the use of a football park in the town.
