Former unit committee chairman fined for failing to pay levy

Nkawie (Ash), Sept 27, GNA- A former unit committee chairman of Abirakuma in the Atwima District, and his friend who refused to pay a levy of 10,000 cedis towards the construction of a school and a water project, were on Thursday fined 150,000 cedis each by the Atwima District magistrate’s court at Nkawie.

The court ordered that 200,000 cedis out of the fine should be given to the Unit Committee for the two projects.

The men, Opanin Kwame Owusu, 68, the former Unit Committee Chairman and Yaw Kusi, 52, pleaded guilty.

Mr A.K. Dubick, Atwima District Environmental Health Officer, prosecuting told the court that a special levy of 10,000 cedis was imposed on residents of Abirakuma towards the construction of a school and a borehole.

He said that the two, however, refused to pay the levy after repeated demands by the unit committee as a result of which a writ of summons was issued against them.
