Ghanaian police have confirmed the arrest of the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, following allegations that he unlawfully took possession of three vehicles belonging to the state-owned beverage company.
The arrest, which took place on Sunday, was confirmed during a press briefing addressed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor.
“A story in the media about the arrest of Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, yes, that is accurate,” DCOP Donkor told journalists. “He was arrested based on a petition that was submitted to us by GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited.”
According to the police, the petition alleged that Mr Jumah, who left his post as managing director in early 2025, had taken vehicles that remained property of the company. As part of the investigation, law enforcement officials say they have already recovered the three vehicles in question.
“I must say that as of this afternoon, we have retrieved the three vehicles that were reportedly stolen by him,” DCOP Donkor said. “He is currently in our custody at the CID headquarters and is assisting with the investigation. We will take it up from there.”
While the specific details of the vehicles and circumstances surrounding their removal have not been publicly disclosed, the case has already sparked public debate about oversight within state-owned enterprises and the fate of public assets after leadership transitions.
Mr Jumah, a former Member of Parliament and veteran political figure, has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing and has assured the public of its commitment to due process and transparency.
